Description
This article is to provide essential information for those who may encounter tech support scams while browsing the internet.
Overview
Tech support scams are fake security warnings that take over your browser and claim your computer is locked or infected to pressure you into calling a fraudulent “support” number, even though companies like Microsoft never display alerts this way or ask users to call a phone number for help. These scams often prevent you from closing the browser, so the safest response is to use Task Manager to end the browser process, reopen it without restoring previous pages, and then run a security scan to ensure nothing harmful was installed.
Steps
Step 1: Press the ctrl-alt-delete
Step 2: Select the task manager option
Note: You should start in the processes section. This is where you want to be.
Step 3: There should be a process for your browser, followed by an icon. You can end that process, and the browser should close.
Step 4: Open your settings and navigate to privacy and security
Step 5: Click on Open Windows security
Step 6: Select virus and threat protection
Step 7: Click on the quick scan option
