Overview
When attempting to use a QR code to connect to a Wi-Fi network, customers may report that they can see the Wi-Fi network but are unable to connect using the QR code or a shared password. This issue commonly occurs when the network is configured using WPA-EAP (Enterprise authentication) instead of a standard password-based Wi-Fi setup. This article explains why the issue occurs and outlines the appropriate resolution path.
Symptoms
Customers may experience one or more of the following:
Wi-Fi network appears but will not connect
QR code scan fails to join the network
Device prompts for additional credentials (username, certificates, or domain)
Connection fails despite using the correct password
Cause
The Wi-Fi network is configured as WPA-EAP / WPA2-Enterprise / WPA3-Enterprise (802.1X).
Enterprise Wi-Fi networks require:
A username and password, and/or
Certificates, and/or
Authentication via a RADIUS server
Standard Wi-Fi QR codes only support WPA/WPA2/WPA3-Personal (PSK) networks that use a shared password. Because of this, QR codes cannot authenticate users on Enterprise/EAP networks.
Recommended Resolution
Note: Support staff should not make changes to customer-owned networks.
1. Verify Wi-Fi Security Mode
The customer (or property owner) should check the router or access point settings for the SSID and confirm it is set to one of the following:
WPA2-Personal (AES)
WPA3-Personal
WPA2/WPA3 Mixed Mode
Avoid:
WPA2-Enterprise
WPA-EAP
802.1X authentication
2. Create a Guest Network (Recommended)
For Airbnb or guest use:
Create a separate Guest SSID
Use WPA2-Personal (AES) or WPA3-Personal
Use a simple SSID name
Use a password without special or unusual characters to avoid QR parsing issues
This prevents disruption to other devices and services on the primary network.
3. Generate a Wi-Fi QR Code
Once the Guest network is properly configured:
Generate a QR code using the SSID and password
Test the QR code on multiple devices
Print and reuse the QR code as needed
Support teams should:
Not modify router or security settings
Avoid creating or reconfiguring networks
Advise the customer to contact their ISP or network administrator
Escalate the issue when appropriate
Making unauthorized changes could disrupt other services connected to the network.
Resolution Summary
If a network is configured using WPA-EAP / Enterprise authentication, password-only connections and QR codes will fail. The correct solution is ensuring the network is configured as WPA-Personal, preferably through a dedicated Guest network managed by the property owner or ISP.
