Affected Platforms/Devices
- All current-generation Apple display models can be paired with iMac and MacBook devices
Connecting to a Mac (laptop or desktop)
1. Plug in the display’s power cable
Connect the display’s power cord to a wall outlet. There’s no power button on Studio Display; it turns on automatically when connected to a device.
2. Find the Thunderbolt / USB‑C port on your Mac
Look for the Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 (USB‑C–shaped) ports on the side or back of your Mac. Studio Display requires a Mac with Thunderbolt 3 or 4 running macOS 12.3 or later.
3. Connect the display cable to the display
Use the included Thunderbolt cable. Plug it into the Thunderbolt 3 port on the back of the Studio Display or Pro Display XDR (it’s usually marked with a lightning‑bolt icon).
4. Connect the other end to your Mac
Plug the other end of the Thunderbolt cable into a Thunderbolt/USB‑C port on your Mac. The display should wake and show your desktop automatically.
5. Adjust display settings in macOS
On your Mac, go to System Settings → Displays to:
• Arrange multiple displays (drag them into the layout that matches your physical setup)
Connecting to an iPad (for supported models)
1. Check that your iPad is compatible
You need an iPad Pro or iPad Air with a USB‑C port, running at least iPadOS 15.4 to use Studio Display.
2. Connect the display to power
Plug the display into a wall outlet with its power cable so it’s ready to turn on.
3. Use the Thunderbolt / USB‑C cable
Plug the cable into the Thunderbolt port on the display, then plug the other end into the USB‑C port on your iPad.
4. Wait for the iPad screen to appear
The iPad should automatically extend or mirror its display. You can usually change behavior in Settings → Display & Brightness → Display on the iPad if options are available (depends on iPad model and iPadOS version).
5. Use built‑in features through iPadOS
The display’s brightness, speakers, camera, and microphones integrate with iPadOS, so you can adjust brightness from Control Center and use the display’s camera and audio in apps like FaceTime.
