Step 1: Check what kind of phone you have
• iPhone: The screen has an App Store icon (blue with a white “A”).
• Android: The screen has a Play Store icon (multicolored triangle).
If you’re not sure, you can still follow along—the steps are very similar.
Step 2: Install the Uber app
On iPhone (App Store)
1. Open the App Store
Tap the blue App Store icon.
2. Search for “Uber”
• Tap the Search tab at the bottom.
• Tap the search bar at the top and type Uber.
• Look for “Uber – Request a ride” with a black icon and white “Uber” text.
3. Download the app
• Tap the button that says Get or shows a cloud icon.
• If asked, enter your Apple ID password, use Face ID, or Touch ID.
• Wait for it to finish downloading, then tap Open.
On Android (Google Play Store)
1. Open the Play Store
Tap the Play Store icon.
2. Search for “Uber”
• Tap the search bar at the top.
• Type Uber.
• Look for “Uber – Request a ride” with the black icon and white “Uber” text.
3. Install the app
• Tap Install.
• Wait for it to finish, then tap Open.
Step 3: Open Uber and start creating an account
1. Open the Uber app
Tap the Uber icon on your home screen.
2. Choose “Sign up”
If you see options like Log in and Sign up, tap Sign up (this is for new users).
Step 4: Enter your phone number
1. Type your mobile phone number
• Make sure the country is correct (United States, if that’s where you are).
• Enter your cell phone number (the one you can receive text messages on).
2. Tap Next or Continue
Uber will send you a text message with a code.
3. Enter the code
• Open your text messages, find the code from Uber.
• Go back to the Uber app and type in that code.
This confirms that the phone number belongs to you.
Step 5: Enter your name, email, and password
1. Type your first and last name
This is what drivers will see.
2. Enter your email address
This is used for receipts and account recovery.
3. Create a password
• Choose something you can remember.
• Write it down somewhere safe if that helps.
4. Agree to terms
There may be a box to check or a button to accept terms—tap it.
5. Tap Next or Continue
Step 6: Add a payment method
Uber needs a way to pay for rides. You can use:
• Credit or debit card
• PayPal (if you use it)
• In some areas, cash is allowed, but a card is most common.
1. Look for “Payment” or “Add payment method.”
• This may appear during sign-up, or you can find it later in the menu (three lines or your profile picture in the top corner).
2. Enter card details
• Card number
• Expiration date
• Security code (3 digits on the back)
• Billing ZIP code
3. Save
Tap Save or Done.
Step 7: Set up safety and comfort options (optional but helpful)
1. Add a trusted contact
• In the menu, look for Safety or Trusted Contacts.
• Add a family member or friend so they can see your trip if you choose to share it.
2. Turn on trip sharing
• You can choose to share your trip status with that contact whenever you ride.
3. Choose comfort options (if available)
• When you request a ride later, you can pick UberX (standard) or Uber Comfort (more legroom, quieter ride).
Step 8: Practice opening the app and finding your location
1. Open Uber
Tap the Uber icon.
2. Allow location access
• The app may ask: “Allow Uber to use your location?”
• Tap Allow While Using App or similar.
This helps the driver find you more easily.
3. Look at the home screen
• You’ll see a box that says “Where to?”
• Under that, you may see your current location on a map.
You don’t have to request a ride, just get comfortable seeing where things are.
Step 9: (Optional) Do a “practice” ride with a family member
If possible, the first time you actually use Uber:
• Have a family member or friend with you.
• Let them watch as you:
• Open the app
• Type a destination
• Confirm the pickup spot
• Request the ride
