1. Here’s a calm, simple, step‑by‑step guide you can follow or read aloud to an older adult.
1. Make sure you have the right devices
• Check the AirPods model:
• AirPods 4 (with noise cancellation), AirPods Pro 2, or AirPods Pro 3
• Check the iPhone:
• iPhone 15 Pro or newer, with the latest iOS (iOS 26 or later)
• Update things:
• Make sure the iPhone and AirPods are updated to the latest software/firmware
If a family member can help with this part once, it usually doesn’t need to be done again.
2. Turn on Apple Intelligence
1. Open the Settings app on the iPhone.
2. Tap “Apple Intelligence & Siri.”
3. Turn on “Apple Intelligence.”
This is what allows Live Translation to work with AirPods.
3. Install the Translate app
1. Open the App Store on the iPhone.
2. In the search box, type “Translate” (Apple’s app).
3. Download/Install the app if it isn’t already installed.
You don’t need to use the app all the time, but it helps with translations and showing text on the screen.
4. Put on and connect the AirPods
1. Put the AirPods in your ears.
2. Make sure Bluetooth is on in Settings.
3. A small box should appear on the iPhone screen saying the AirPods are connected.
Once they’re connected, you’re ready to use Live Translation.
5. Start Live Translation
When someone nearby is speaking another language:
1. Have your iPhone unlocked and nearby.
2. Press and hold the stem of one AirPod (like you would to control noise cancellation) to bring up the control on the iPhone, or open the Translate app directly.
3. In the Translate app or Live Translation screen:
• Choose your language (for example, “English”).
• Choose the other person’s language (for example, “Spanish”).
Now the iPhone and AirPods are ready to listen.
6. Use it in a real conversation
1. Face the person who is speaking another language.
2. Let them speak normally.
3. Your AirPods will:
• Listen
• Translate
• Speak the translation into your ear in your language
4. The iPhone screen can also show the translated words as text, which can help if you miss something.
If you want to reply, you can speak in your own language, and the iPhone can show or play your words in their language using the Translate app.
7. Gentle tips for older adults
• Stay in a quiet place when possible—this makes translation clearer.
• Speak slowly and clearly when you reply.
• Practice at home with a family member using two languages, just to get comfortable.
• It’s okay to take your time between sentences; the system will wait for you.
